Scion steps into sports car market
In late November, Scion introduced the 2013 FR-S compact rear-wheel drive sports car. The high-performance coupe is the fifth model in the Scion family and will be available in spring of 2012.
“Serving as a laboratory for Toyota, Scion is always experimenting with new things,” said Jack Hollis, Scion vice president in a released statement. “The brand is iconic with the xB, adrenalized by the tC, and groundbreaking with the iQ. The FR-S will no doubt serve as the halo car, expanding Scion into a new dimension of driving performance.”
FR-S stands for Front-engine, Rear-wheel drive, Sport. The authentic rear-wheel-drive sports car is balanced for performance, handling, style and utility.
Inspired by the AE86 generation of the Toyota Corolla, the FR-S was designed around the goal of achieving “Pure Balance.” The FR-S features the world’s only flat boxer engine in a front-engine, rear-wheel drive configuration. The engine placement will provide the car a front-to-rear weight ratio of 53:47, comparable to other supercars, Scion says.
Toyota and Subaru worked together to develop the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to produce 200 horsepower.
“We all know that it’s not hard to make horsepower and torque, but it is hard to do all that and still achieve impressive fuel economy,” Hollis said. “The FR-S accomplishes all three.”
Whether driving the six-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic, the driver is in control. The manual features quick shifts, while the automatic shift changes can be initiated by steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
The low weight and dynamically tuned suspension allow for quick and nimble turns and maneuverability. Coupled with the lightweight design materials and compact size, the FR-S is a performance sports car.
The FR-S look is inspired by the Toyota 2000GT, providing a low roof-line and aerodynamic shape. Interior seating features a 2+2 arrangement for both form and function, with the rear seats folding flat.
